Honoring Black History in the Industry

What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is a time to honor the achievements, resilience, and lasting contributions of Black Americans throughout history. Since its official recognition in 1976, this month has served as a reflection on the impact Black leaders have had across countless industries, shaping the world we live in today. Within all industries, Black innovators have left an undeniable mark on society. The construction industry is no exception. Black professionals have played a crucial role in building America’s infrastructure, transforming engineering, and pioneering advancements that continue to shape the way we design and develop our environment.

Black History in the Industry
Despite systemic barriers, Black leaders in construction, architecture, and engineering have broken through limitations to bring progress to the industry. Archie Alexander made history as one of the first Black civil engineers, designing major infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and public buildings. His work, including contributions to Washington, D.C.’s Tidal Basin Bridge, showcased his expertise and helped set new standards in the field.

Hattie Scott Peterson became the first Black woman in the U.S. to be recognized as a licensed civil engineer, working on military construction projects during World War II before later breaking barriers at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Her career paved the way for women and minorities in the industry.

Alice H. Parker’s 1919 patent for a natural gas-powered central heating system revolutionized home heating and laid the foundation for modern HVAC systems, improving home comfort and energy efficiency. These individuals, along with many others, have shaped not only construction but also the way we live and interact with the spaces around us.

This month, we celebrate the perseverance, brilliance, and dedication of Black professionals who have helped shape communities and create opportunities for future generations.
